Nativity Scene

I posted a few days ago about having lost the baby Jesus from the white ceramic nativity scene we have.  Still haven't found the little guy unfortunately.  I'm sure He'll show up somewhere.  In the meantime I found this cute little set in the decoration section of Big W (similar to Walmart).  It's actually meant to hang on the tree, but I just cut the strings off and I have placed it on my mirrored tray on the table I decorated.  I thinkit's so cute.

St. Francis and the Christmas Creche

FR. WILLIAM SAUNDERS
What is the origin of the Nativity Scene (creche)?

The story of the origin of the Christmas creche rests with the very holy man, St. Francis of Assisi.

In the year 1223, St. Francis, a deacon, was visiting the town of Grecio to celebrate Christmas. Grecio was a small town built on a mountainside overlooking a beautiful valley. The people had cultivated the fertile area with vineyards. St. Francis realized that the chapel of the Franciscan hermitage would be too small to hold the congregation for Midnight Mass. So he found a niche in the rock near the town square and set up the altar. However, this Midnight Mass would be very special, unlike any other Midnight Mass.
St. Bonaventure (d. 1274) in his Life of St. Francis of Assisi tells the story the best:

It happened in the third year before his death, that in order to excite the inhabitants of Grecio to commemorate the nativity of the Infant Jesus with great devotion, [St. Francis] determined to keep it with all possible solemnity; and lest he should be accused of lightness or novelty, he asked and obtained the permission of the sovereign Pontiff. Then he prepared a manger, and brought hay, and an ox and an ass to the place appointed. The brethren were summoned, the people ran together, the forest resounded with their voices, and that venerable night was made glorious by many and brilliant lights and sonorous psalms of praise. The man of God [St. Francis] stood before the manger, full of devotion and piety, bathed in tears and radiant with joy; the Holy Gospel was chanted by Francis, the Levite of Christ. Then he preached to the people around the nativity of the poor King; and being unable to utter His name for the tenderness of His love, He called Him the Babe of Bethlehem. A certain valiant and veracious soldier, Master John of Grecio, who, for the love of Christ, had left the warfare of this world, and become a dear friend of this holy man, affirmed that he beheld an Infant marvellously beautiful, sleeping in the manger, Whom the blessed Father Francis embraced with both his arms, as if he would awake Him from sleep. This vision of the devout soldier is credible, not only by reason of the sanctity of him that saw it, but by reason of the miracles which afterwards confirmed its truth. For example of Francis, if it be considered by the world, is doubtless sufficient to excite all hearts which are negligent in the faith of Christ; and the hay of that manger, being preserved by the people, miraculously cured all diseases of cattle, and many other pestilences; God thus in all things glorifying his servant, and witnessing to the great efficacy of his holy prayers by manifest prodigies and miracles.

Although the story is long old, the message is clear for us. Our own Nativity scenes which rest under our Christmas trees are a visible reminder of that night when our Savior was born. May we never forget to see in our hearts the little Babe of Bethlehem, who came to save us from sin. We must never forget that the wood of the manger that held Him so securely would one day give way to the wood of the cross. May we too embrace Him with all of our love as did St. Francis. To all of the readers of “Straight Answers,” I wish you a very holy Christmas.

Yesterday I posted about my hope that some of you would like to give me your opinion on the pendants I have recently made.  I am just having a fiddle with them, something to just keep me doing something.  I have made a few though and I just don't know that many people to give them to, so maybe I will start an Etsy shop and hopefully sell some.  BEFORE that though, I being the perfectionist and great procrastinator that I am, if I don't get some real honest feedback about the quality of them I will probably never offer them for sale.  So if you would do me a favour and let me know if you would like one, even choose one from the ones I have posted and I'll send you one for your critical evaluation.  PLEASE I really do want some honest opinions of the standard before I set up a shop.

A White Christmas

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas,...oh that would be soooo nice right now.  A white snowy, cold, frosty, fire warmed Christmas.  Instead I am sitting with the shades drawn to keep out the heat and sun, the fan is on high, I could have the air con on but I am trying to do my bit to reduce my carbon footprint and only turn on the air late in the afternoon.  I bought a white tree though, and sprinkled it with blue, pink and purple decorations.  It is my attempt at a white Christmas.

Bing Crosby was just like me and he dreamt of a white christmas too, remember?
White Christmas !

The song White Christmas is undoubtedly the most famous and popular of all the Christmas songs. The music and lyrics for White Christmas were written by Irving Berlin in 1942 and originally featured in the movie Holiday Inn starring Bing Crosby. The lyrics of White Christmas struck a chord with the soldiers fighting in the Second World War and their families who were waiting for them back home. The song and recording of White Christmas by Bing Crosby with John Scott Trotter's orchestra and the Ken Darby Singers was so popular that it was later reprised in the movie called after its name - White Christmas. The film White Christmas once again starred Bing Crosby together with Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen.

Sing a long with me now.

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

Just like the ones I used to know

Where the treetops glisten,

and children listen

To hear sleigh bells in the snow

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

With every Christmas card I write

May your days be merry and bright

And may all your Christmases be white

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas

With every Christmas card I write

May your days be merry and bright

And may all your Christmases be white

Classic Christmas isn't it!

Now if you would be so kind, I have been having a little fiddle with some pendants, tell me what you think please?  I am wondering if maybe I should sell some, but I'd like to give a few away first, I just love giving stuff to people.  I'm not sure if they are good enough yet to sell so I really would like to send some to you if you'd like and give me your opinion.

Some of the images like the little birds above and the boy and girl holding hands in the first set of photos, are vintage from old childrens books.  Others are beautiful crafting papers, some I have embellished myself.  The glass discs are lovely and clear and the bails (clasps for chain) are sterling silver.  I really would love to send you a pendant, get your totally honest opinion and just have a bit of fun, this close to Christmas.  Post a comment if you would like a little gift.
